Red Flags Worth Walking Away From

"We're military friendly" — but no facility code

Marketing labels aren't approval. The test: a facility code and a Comparison Tool listing for your exact program. No code, no certification.

"Enroll now — approval is coming"

If you enroll while approval is pending, you carry the risk. Retroactive coverage is never something to count on. Get status and timelines in writing from the SAA or SCO first.

Pressure to pay out of pocket "temporarily"

Paying tuition yourself while "the paperwork clears" can leave you with debt the VA never reimburses. Verify first, pay never — that's the order.

Answers that keep changing

If the SCO, admissions, and the website give three different answers about approval, treat that as your answer. Confirm independently with the SAA before going further.

What is WEAMS?

WEAMS (Web Enabled Approval Management System) is the VA's database of institutions and programs approved for GI Bill® funding. The public search — and the friendlier GI Bill® Comparison Tool — is how you confirm a specific program at a specific campus is approved before you enroll.

Can I use my GI Bill® at a school that isn't in WEAMS?

Generally no. The VA only pays benefits for approved programs at approved facilities. If your school or program isn't listed, benefits can't be certified until a State Approving Agency approves it — so verify before you enroll, not after.

The school is listed, but my program isn't. Does that matter?

Yes — approval is per program, per campus, and often per format, not school-wide. A school can have dozens of approved programs while yours isn't one of them. Confirm your exact program, campus, and modality with the School Certifying Official before committing.

If approval comes later, will the VA pay retroactively?

Sometimes approval is effective from a date that covers earlier enrollment, but you should never count on it. If you enroll and pay out of pocket while approval is pending, you're carrying the risk. Verify the status with the school's SCO and the State Approving Agency, and get timelines in writing before you commit.

The school calls itself military friendly — isn't that enough?

No. 'Military friendly' is a marketing label, not a VA approval status. The only proof that matters is a current listing in WEAMS or the GI Bill® Comparison Tool for your exact program, plus a facility code the School Certifying Official can show you.
