If you work full-time and want a degree without stepping away from your career, the question about any hybrid program is the same: how often do you actually have to be on campus, for how long, and what happens while you are there? Westcliff University's Professional Weekend format has a clear answer: coursework online through the semester, plus one three-day weekend on campus. Westcliff describes it for its graduate and doctoral programs, and its military admissions team also runs the same weekend-hybrid schedule for two bachelor's degrees at two campuses. 2. How a semester runs: online most of the time, on campus once

The online part

For most of the semester you are an online student. Westcliff describes the coursework as asynchronous and self-directed: lectures, readings and assignments on your own schedule, with no weekly class time to log in for. That is what makes the format work around shift work, travel or a family calendar. Self-directed does not mean no deadlines, though. Ask your admissions advisor how due dates and weekly pacing work in your program, and be honest with yourself about whether you keep pace without a fixed class time. Veterans who did well with self-paced military training usually do fine here.

The weekend residency

Once per semester you travel to a Westcliff campus for a three-day residency, Friday afternoon through Sunday midday. Westcliff calls these "Pro Weekends," and they are the entire in-person requirement of the format.

Each residency is built around a new workshop series with a semester theme. For spring 2026 the theme was "The Executive's Pen": emails that drive action, cross-cultural business communication, scholarly writing and competitive strategy. Past themes have covered artificial intelligence, sustainability and navigating the modern job market. Alongside the workshops you work through case studies and group exercises that connect the online material to skills you can use at work on Monday. James Jones, Westcliff's academic operations manager, described it as "this innovative weekend that revolves around a new workshop series every semester," with "classrooms filled with students and faculty for this classic classroom experience."

Outside the classroom, Westcliff's Student Life department runs campus activities during the weekend, and virtual events through the year (cooking demonstrations, virtual yoga) keep the cohort connected between residencies. One honest note: the school publishes the window and the kind of work, not an hour-by-hour agenda, and the workshop series changes every semester. 3. Who it is built for, and why the weekend matters

Westcliff is specific about the student it designed this for: someone who cannot step away from an active career, who wants a career pivot (engineering to management, business to technology) while staying employed, who is balancing family commitments, who may live out of state, and who still wants in-person mentorship and networking. If you are a working veteran, that list probably reads like your own situation. A former logistics NCO now in operations management who wants an MBA, an IT specialist moving toward a master's in computer science, or a recently separated E-5 finishing a bachelor's in business or IT while working, is exactly the profile the format was built around.

Why not just go fully online? Westcliff's answer is the cohort. "The biggest benefit to students really is being on campus for those few opportunities because they are meeting other students, and they are applying the skills that they're going to need in the workplace right now," Jones said. For a veteran that matters more than it might sound: many of us leave service with a deep military network and a thin civilian one. 4. Programs and campuses

Westcliff's own description of the format covers its graduate and doctoral programs at the five campuses above. For veteran students the school's military admissions team also offers the BBA and the BS in Information Technology on the same weekend-hybrid schedule, currently at Irvine and Dallas, which matters if you are using the GI Bill for a first degree rather than a master's. Westcliff also runs live-online and on-campus formats and has other U.S. locations. 5. Is it right for you, and what to ask before you enroll

It is a strong fit if you work full-time, want a degree in business, technology or engineering management (a bachelor's, master's or doctorate), can commit to one weekend on campus each semester (including travel if you are not local), and want a cohort you actually meet. Among Westcliff's formats, this is usually the stronger option for a working veteran: you keep the in-person network without a weekly commute.

Look at a different format if you learn better with live instruction every week (Westcliff's live-online or on-campus schedules suit that better), or if travel to one of the five campuses is not realistic, in which case a fully online program is the practical choice.
