Best hybrid degree programs for veterans using the GI Bill® in 2026
If you already have a bachelor's degree and are planning your civilian career, compare hybrid degree programs for veterans by what you will study and the attendance you can manage. This guide covers six graduate options combining online learning with scheduled campus sessions, plus questions to resolve before using your GI Bill®. You can build a shortlist and check it yourself without contacting VeteranDegrees.

Key takeaways
- Compare hybrid degree programs for veterans by curriculum, required travel, total cost and exact program approval.
- Kelley Direct requires two in-residence courses; Carnegie Mellon's MBA combines online classes and Access Weekends.
- Harvard Extension's computing programs require a three-week campus course, not regular campus attendance throughout the degree.
- Berkeley's MPH requires two campus visits; Stanislaus State's MSW adds monthly classes and substantial summer placements.
- A hybrid label alone does not establish resident-rate housing eligibility; check your actual courses with the school and VA.
1. How we chose these programs
This is not a ranking. These options illustrate different fields and attendance patterns, not a claim that one school is better than another. All six are graduate programs; if you need your first degree, start with undergraduate options instead.
The same selection criteria apply to every school:
- VA approval: Check the exact program and campus in WEAMS, VA's Web Enabled Approval Management System, or the approved-program information in VA's current directory.
- Institutional accreditation: A recognized regional institutional accreditor, separate from VA approval.
- Published blended format: Online study combined with scheduled in-person academic sessions, rather than an optional social visit.
- A realistic mix: Public universities and private nonprofit universities in the Midwest, Northeast and West, with different travel commitments.
- Comparable facts: The school's own attendance requirements and published tuition, with the academic year or entry cohort identified.
School program pages, tuition schedules and VA directory entries were checked in October 2026. Indiana University identifies Higher Learning Commission accreditation; Carnegie Mellon identifies Middle States accreditation; Harvard's institutional accreditation is through the New England Commission of Higher Education; Berkeley and Stanislaus State identify Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation.
An institution's VA listing is not confirmation of every degree or course format. The WEAMS public address redirected to VA's Comparison Tool during the October 2026 check; the school listings were checked there, but approval of each exact program and campus still needs confirmation before enrollment. Our guide to checking VA-approved schools explains the distinction.
The tuition figures below are published charges, not estimates of what VA will pay or what you will owe. Do not compare a whole-degree total with another school's per-unit charge as though they were the same measure.
2. Business and management
An MBA is worth comparing when your intended work calls for graduate business study. Ask which courses address your actual skill gaps, whether that is finance, operations, analysis or managing teams.
1) Indiana University Bloomington: Kelley Direct MBA
This public-university option combines online coursework with two required in-residence courses. Kelley publishes a first-year Bloomington experience and second-year experiences in Bloomington or other U.S. locations; each residence typically lasts four to five days, including travel days. It is an option to compare if you can arrange concentrated trips rather than regular commuting.
Published tuition: $94,944.42 for 54 credits for students starting in fall 2026 or spring 2027, plus a $2,000 in-person experience fee. Kelley says that fee includes hotel accommodation, most meals and course materials; travel to and from the location is your responsibility. Sources: Kelley Direct's “Beyond online: Build connections in person” and “Kelley Direct tuition and fees,” checked October 2026.
What to look for
- Which business courses match the work you want to prepare for.
- The residence dates, locations and leave you would need.
- How each short residence and online term would be certified for VA benefits.
2) Carnegie Mellon University: Tepper Online Hybrid MBA
This private nonprofit university in Pittsburgh publishes live online classes on two evenings each week, independent coursework and in-person Access Weekends. The program offers eight in-person opportunities; attendance at the first four Academic Access Weekends, including BaseCamp, is expected, while some later experiences are optional. Distinguish the academic requirements from optional events before making travel plans.
Published tuition: $769 per unit for the fall 2026 entering cohort in the 2026-27 schedule; 192 units are required to graduate. A technology fee is additional, and the university says rates are reviewed annually. Sources: Tepper's “Online Hybrid Master of Business Administration” and Carnegie Mellon's “2026-2027 Cost of Attendance: Tepper School Online Hybrid MBA,” checked October 2026.
What to look for
- Whether the analytics-focused curriculum fits your management interests.
- Whether the live evening classes fit work and family commitments.
- Which Access Weekends are required academic instruction in your course schedule.

3. Technology
Software development and data analysis require different preparation. Compare the course sequence, not just the technology label, and ask whether you need additional programming or mathematics study before beginning.
3) Harvard Extension School: Computer Science master's program
Harvard Extension publishes 11 online courses and one three-week summer course on campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The credential is a Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies in the field of Computer Science, not an MS in Computer Science. Its published curriculum includes algorithms, software design and cloud computing; the concentrated campus requirement needs a different travel plan from monthly hybrid classes.
Published tuition: $3,580 per four-credit graduate course for 2026-27. Harvard Extension's tuition page estimates $42,960 for a 12-course graduate degree, excluding other expenses. Sources: “Computer Science Master's Degree Program” and “Paying for School,” checked October 2026. VA's October 2026 directory entry for Harvard University Extension also displayed a Heightened Cash Monitoring caution; review its current details and ask the school what it means for your funding.
What to look for
- Whether the ALM credential and course content match your academic goal.
- Your readiness for the admission courses in Java and data structures.
- Campus-course dates, lodging and certification of the remaining online terms.
4) Harvard Extension School: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence master's program
This is a separate ALM in Extension Studies in the field of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Harvard Extension publishes 11 online courses and one three-week campus course; topics include statistical modeling, machine learning and data engineering. Its program page assumes comfort with calculus and writing Python functions, so compare that preparation with your current skills.
Published tuition: $3,580 per four-credit graduate course for 2026-27, with a published $42,960 estimate for a 12-course graduate degree before other expenses. Sources: “Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Master's Degree Program” and “Paying for School,” checked October 2026. The same Harvard University Extension VA directory caution noted above applies to this institution listing; verify the current record rather than treating inclusion here as an endorsement.
What to look for
- Whether you want data modeling and analysis rather than a broader software curriculum.
- The preparation needed for the admission courses and later quantitative work.
- How the three-week campus course fits your schedule and benefit certification.
4. Public service, health and other fields
Public health and social work are different academic paths. Check placement obligations and state licensing requirements separately from the online or hybrid classroom schedule.
5) University of California, Berkeley: Online Master of Public Health
Berkeley's public-university MPH requires two in-person campus visits alongside online study. Its admissions and financial information page describes the visits as totaling 15 days and lists 42 units required for graduation. Compare it if population health is your goal and you can travel for the required sessions; do not treat the word “online” as meaning no campus attendance.
Published program charges: $1,629 per enrolled unit in fall 2026 and $1,710 per unit in spring 2027. Campus fees, travel and other costs are additional; Berkeley explicitly advises veterans to check whether the overall program fee includes charges their benefits do not cover. Source: Berkeley Public Health's “Online MPH Admissions and Financial Information,” checked October 2026. Its cost table mixes academic years for some campus fees, so request a current itemized quote instead of copying that table's overall estimate.
What to look for
- The concentration and courses relevant to your intended public-health work.
- The dates and academic requirements of both campus visits.
- The current charges VA can certify, including any noncovered program fees.
6) California State University, Stanislaus: Hybrid Master of Social Work
Stanislaus State's public-university MSW combines online coursework with in-person classes at Stockton, published as one monthly session and three meetings per quarter. The 60-unit program runs for 24 months. Crucially, its overview describes full-time summer placements of 40 hours per week for three months in both years and says students should arrange availability with employers.
Published tuition: $37,500 for the MSW 11 cohort, whose payment schedule runs from fall 2026 through summer 2028, plus additional fees. Sources: Continuing and Professional Education's “Program Overview” and “Tuition & Financial Aid” for the MSW Hybrid program, checked October 2026. The school identifies Council on Social Work Education program accreditation as well as institutional accreditation.
What to look for
- Whether social work practice, policy and research fit your intended work.
- How you would manage the summer placements, not only monthly classes.
- Placement location, licensing requirements and VA certification of each enrollment period.

5. How to choose
Choose the curriculum and credential first; then test attendance, cost and benefit fit. If you cannot attend the required sessions or placements, compare an online-only option instead. If you need an undergraduate credential, this graduate list is not your starting point.
Understand hybrid study and the housing allowance
A hybrid program may qualify you for the resident-rate monthly housing allowance (MHA) instead of the online-only rate of up to $1,261 a month for 2026-27, generally when you are enrolled more than half-time with at least one in-person class that counts toward your degree. Your eligibility and certified coursework matter; the school certifying official and VA decide how the rules apply.
VA's Post-9/11 GI Bill rate page, updated July 31, 2026 and checked October 2026, gives that online-only maximum for eligible students who began using benefits on or after January 1, 2018, for August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027. A short campus course does not establish resident-rate eligibility for every online term. Housing support helps with living costs while studying; it should not determine your field or school.
Ask the school certifying official
Send your proposed degree plan and ask for written answers:
- Is this exact degree, campus and delivery format currently approved for my education benefit?
- Which required courses will be certified as resident training, and for which enrollment dates?
- What is my rate of pursuit in each course period, including overlapping or shortened terms?
- What tuition and fees can be certified, and what remains outside that coverage?
- How will accepted transfer credits change my remaining courses and enrollment level?
- What happens to certification if a campus session is canceled, missed or moved online?
For Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E / Chapter 31), discuss the school and education plan with your VR&E counselor before committing. A GI Bill listing does not replace your counselor's approval.
Check any school in VA's tool
Open VA's GI Bill Comparison Tool and select “Schools and employers.” Search the institution by name, match the campus and review accreditation, cautionary warnings and approved-program information where available. Enter your benefit circumstances for an estimate, then confirm the exact program and charges with the certifying official.
Check the WEAMS public address as well; during the October 2026 check it redirected to the Comparison Tool. Keep a dated record of the program information and written confirmation. Neither a directory listing nor an estimate is a VA endorsement or an individual benefit determination.
Programs we work with
These are additional options, separate from the six-program comparison, for readers considering the fields and locations below. Use the same curriculum, attendance and approval checks rather than choosing a school because it appears in this subsection.
Westcliff University (VeteranDegrees partner). Westcliff features hybrid business and technology options, including the MBA, MS Computer Science and MS Information Technology, and defines hybrid study as on-site attendance at least once per term. Cybersecurity is a concentration in selected degrees, not a separate cybersecurity degree; confirm the curriculum and campus schedule for your chosen program. If you use VR&E, discuss your plan with your counselor and Westcliff military admissions rather than assuming the Dallas campus can enroll you.
CIAM's MBA in Executive Management (VeteranDegrees partner). CIAM in Alhambra offers concentrations in Business Analytics and Project Management, with one online course and one hybrid course in each 14-week term. The MBA is CIAM's only hybrid program; its MS in Data Analytics and MA in Organizational Leadership are fully online. Admission requires a bachelor's degree and about one year of work experience, with a possible waiver; no GMAT or GRE is required.
Monroe University (VeteranDegrees partner). Monroe offers hybrid courses in MBA, MPA and MS Computer Science for the Winter 2027 semester. Its published cadence is one required in-person session per semester at the Bronx campus; confirm which courses are available and count toward your degree rather than assuming the entire degree is hybrid. Winter 2027 begins January 8, 2027, and the school certifying official and VA determine whether your coursework counts as resident training.
Schools marked VeteranDegrees partner pay us a fixed marketing fee that does not depend on enrollment; they are listed separately and did not affect the list above.
6. FAQ
Which hybrid degree programs for veterans should I compare first?
Start with programs that teach the skills and award the credential you need. This guide compares six graduate options in business, computing, public health and social work; undergraduate applicants need a different shortlist. Compare the required travel and current program approval before using benefits.
Does any campus visit qualify me for resident-rate housing?
No. A hybrid program may qualify you when your actual enrollment includes qualifying in-person coursework and you meet the other VA requirements, generally including more-than-half-time enrollment. A short residence does not establish resident-rate eligibility throughout an otherwise online degree; ask the certifying official about each enrollment period.
How much is online-only GI Bill housing in 2026-27?
VA lists up to $1,261 a month for eligible online-only students who began using benefits on or after January 1, 2018. That rate applies from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027, and your actual payment depends on eligibility and enrollment. It is housing support, not a tuition payment.
Does a VA school listing mean my exact hybrid degree is approved?
No. Confirm the exact program, campus and delivery format using current VA program information and written confirmation from the school certifying official. Institutional accreditation is a separate check, and a directory listing is not a VA endorsement.
Will the GI Bill pay the whole published tuition amount?
Not necessarily. Coverage depends on your benefit, eligibility tier, approved charges and applicable limits. Request an itemized estimate separating tuition, mandatory fees, travel and other expenses, and ask which charges can be certified.
Can I compare schools without using a VeteranDegrees partner?
Yes. You can build and verify your own shortlist using the school's published program information and VA's Comparison Tool or WEAMS. A free Benefits Navigator call can help you compare any school on that shortlist, with no obligation to enroll anywhere.
