Best military-friendly online colleges for veterans in 2026
If you are a veteran fitting college around work and family, compare military friendly online colleges by curriculum, remaining coursework and schedule. This guide compares six public and private nonprofit options and explains how to verify VA approval before using your GI Bill® benefits.
In this guide
TL;DR
- Compare military friendly online colleges by curriculum, remaining coursework and the schedule you can sustain.
- UMGC, Penn State World Campus and Oregon State Ecampus offer public-university online options.
- SNHU, Western Governors University and Excelsior offer private nonprofit online options with different tuition models.
- Verify your exact program with VA; accepted military credit does not always replace required courses.
1. How we chose these colleges
This is not a ranking. The same criteria apply to every college:
- VA approval: Confirm approved programs in WEAMS, VA's Web Enabled Approval Management System, or VA's current approved-program search.
- Regional accreditation: Identify the recognized institutional accreditor, historically called a regional accreditor.
- Online access: Include fully online degree options that veterans across the United States can consider, subject to admission and program-specific state restrictions.
- Military learning: Require a published policy for evaluating military training or the Joint Services Transcript (JST).
- A realistic mix: Compare public universities and private nonprofit institutions, including semester, quarter and competency-based study.
Sources were checked in October 2026. All six institutions appear in VA's Comparison Tool; each degree and your eligibility still need confirmation. The public WEAMS address redirected to VA's tool, so use VA's current approved-program search.
2. What military-friendly should mean in practice
“Military Friendly” is a third-party designation, not VA approval. Use these checks for any school:
- WEAMS and program approval: Match your degree, campus or online division, and format with VA's approval record before committing benefits.
- Accreditation: Check the named institutional accreditor and, for licensed professions, program accreditation and your state's requirements.
- Principles of Excellence: Check participation in VA's tool. VA's program page, checked October 2026, describes guidelines including a written personal summary of educational costs.
- Military training credit: Submit the JST or Community College of the Air Force transcript, where applicable. Ask which required courses the accepted credits replace.
- Certification and veteran services: Get the certifying official's contact details. Confirm online access to veteran services and the policy for military-duty interruptions.
- Yellow Ribbon where relevant: Check current participation and limits if eligible Post-9/11 tuition exceeds VA coverage. The school contributes toward eligible excess tuition and VA matches it; Yellow Ribbon does not apply to Chapter 35.
Open the GI Bill Comparison Tool, choose “Schools and employers,” and search by name. This is VA's tool, not a VeteranDegrees product. Select the correct campus or online division, review approval information, warnings and benefit details, then confirm your program with the certifying official.

3. Public universities with online degree options
Compare the major and credit evaluation first. Semester credits, quarter credits and six-month terms are different tuition units.
1) University of Maryland Global Campus (online)
UMGC's BS in Business Administration & Management has all courses available online. UMGC is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
Tuition: Standard undergraduate tuition for fall 2026 through spring 2027 is $337 per semester credit in-state or $499 out-of-state, before applicable fees. Do not assume that a published military rate applies to every separated veteran. Military credit: UMGC evaluates military transcripts using American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations and grants credit only when applicable to the chosen curriculum.
What to look for:
- Your tuition classification and any additional fees.
- Which military credits replace required business courses.
- Whether every course in your plan can be completed online.
Sources checked October 2026: UMGC, “Business Administration & Management,” “Tuition and Fees,” “Credit for Military Education & Training,” and “Accreditation.”
2) Penn State World Campus (online)
Penn State World Campus describes fully online, asynchronous courses, with work completed within deadlines. Penn State is accredited by MSCHE.
Tuition: For 2026–27, undergraduate enrollment of 11 or fewer credits costs $644 per semester credit with 59 or fewer accumulated credits, or $692 with 60 or more. Larger course loads use semester rates. Military credit: Penn State considers ACE-recommended military learning documented through the JST or CCAF; the academic department decides what applies to your degree.
What to look for:
- How transferred credits affect both tuition level and requirements.
- The major's course sequence and assignment schedule.
- Your remaining Penn State coursework after evaluation.
Sources checked October 2026: Penn State World Campus, “Tuition and Costs,” “Admissions and Transfer Credits,” and “Why military students choose Penn State World Campus.”
3) Oregon State University Ecampus (online)
Oregon State's online BA or BS in Business Administration allows required experiential learning where you live. Oregon State is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).
Tuition: The 2026–27 undergraduate base rate is $409 per quarter credit; business programs cost $438 and engineering majors $480, including the distance education fee. Other expenses may apply. Military credit: Oregon State publishes military-education credit opportunities, subject to evaluation and degree applicability.
What to look for:
- The rate for your major, not just the base rate.
- Quarter-credit conversion when comparing semester-based schools.
- How military learning and practical work fit your degree plan.
Sources checked October 2026: Oregon State Ecampus, “Tuition Rates,” “Business administration,” “College credit transfer turns ‘some college’ into real progress toward your bachelor's degree,” and “About Oregon State University Ecampus.”
4. Private nonprofit universities with online degree options
Compare deadlines, assessments and remaining requirements. Nonprofit status is an institution type, not a substitute for checking program fit.
4) Southern New Hampshire University (online)
SNHU's online undergraduate courses have eight-week terms, weekly deadlines and no set meeting times. SNHU is a private nonprofit institution accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
Tuition: Published 2026–27 online tuition is $354 per semester credit for undergraduate study and $659 for graduate study, with course materials and other applicable charges separate. Military credit: SNHU publishes credit evaluation for military service through the JST and ACE recommendations, plus eligible examinations; its bachelor's transfer ceiling is not a promise of an individual award.
What to look for:
- Weekly workload during the shorter terms.
- Where military learning fits your intended major.
- Standard veteran tuition rather than an active-duty discount.
Sources checked October 2026: SNHU, “Online Tuition & Financial Aid,” “Transfer Military Education to College Credits,” and “Picture an Online Degree at Your Own Pace.”
5) Western Governors University (online)
WGU's fully online BS in Business Management uses competency-based progress: you advance by demonstrating mastery. WGU is a private nonprofit institution accredited by NWCCU.
Tuition: WGU's 2026–27 tuition update, effective for terms starting October 1, 2026, lists $3,850 per six-month term for BS Business Management, with applicable resource fees separate. Other degrees have different rates. Military credit: WGU says it does not award traditional credit directly for military experience, but ACE-reviewed learning that matches the degree may waive requirements.
What to look for:
- Whether independent study and assessment-based progress suit you.
- Written requirement waivers before starting your degree.
- The tuition and fees for your exact program and start term.
Sources checked October 2026: WGU, “Online Business Management Degree,” “Tuition Update Details,” “Support for Military Members and Families,” and “WGU is Accredited and Recognized.”
6) Excelsior University (online)
Excelsior describes online courses in eight- and fifteen-week terms and an online BS in Business. It is a private nonprofit institution accredited by MSCHE; confirm your specific program's format.
Tuition: The current undergraduate schedule lists $510 per semester credit for non-nursing programs, plus academic services and technology fees. The page does not label that rate with an academic year; it separately dates an eligible BS Business fixed-rate option to spring 2026. Military credit: Excelsior publishes evaluation of military training and experience, prior coursework and eligible exams for degree credit.
What to look for:
- Your applicable standard, veteran or program-specific pricing.
- Remaining degree requirements after the official evaluation.
- Course-length choices and additional fees.
Sources checked October 2026: Excelsior University, “Undergraduate Tuition and Fees,” “Veterans,” and “Bachelor of Science in Business.”

5. Online or hybrid: choosing your format
Choose the curriculum first, then an attendance schedule you can sustain. Online study removes campus travel, not deadlines or practical work. Hybrid study adds physical attendance; consider the degree and travel requirements together.
Housing allowance supports living costs while studying. VA's Post-9/11 GI Bill rates page, checked October 2026, lists fully online monthly housing allowance of up to $1,261 a month for August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027, for eligible students who began using benefits on or after January 1, 2018. Your eligibility tier and rate of pursuit can reduce the payment; not everyone is eligible for housing support.
A hybrid program may qualify you for the resident rate, generally when you are enrolled more than half-time with at least one in-person class that counts toward the degree. The school certifying official and VA decide how your enrollment is certified and what rate applies. Live video attendance is not physical attendance; our GI Bill one-class rule guide explains the questions to ask.
Before choosing, obtain:
- A degree audit showing required courses still left after military-credit review.
- A term schedule with meeting times, deadlines and any travel.
- Written confirmation of the exact program's VA approval and certification.
- A current tuition-and-fee estimate using your actual residency and status.
- A benefits plan that accounts for eligibility, course load and term dates.
If travel is impractical, start with fully online options. Compare hybrid study if you want classroom contact and can attend.
Programs we work with
These options are separate from the six-college comparison above. Use the same curriculum, schedule and approval checks.
Westcliff University (VeteranDegrees partner). Westcliff offers live online study, with its 2026–27 published tuition schedule distinguishing bachelor's, master's and doctoral study; confirm the exact program and scheduled attendance for your intended term rather than assuming it is self-paced or hybrid. Westcliff is WSCUC accredited, has ACBSP business accreditation, accepts the Joint Services Transcript for evaluation, and participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Cybersecurity is a concentration within named programs, not a separate cybersecurity degree; compare the curriculum and current program approval with your goals before deciding how your benefits may apply.
CIAM, California Institute of Advanced Management (VeteranDegrees partner). CIAM is a private nonprofit, WSCUC-accredited, graduate-only institution in Alhambra, California; its MS in Data Analytics and MA in Organizational Leadership are fully online, as confirmed by CIAM on August 18, 2026. These degrees are not hybrid and should not be chosen with an expectation of resident-rate housing support; CIAM's MBA in Executive Management is its only hybrid program. CIAM participates in GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon benefits, but confirm the exact degree, admission requirements and current tuition-and-fee estimate rather than relying on its older 2025–26 figures.
6. FAQ
Which military-friendly online college should a veteran choose?
Choose the college whose curriculum, remaining coursework and attendance requirements fit your career goal. Compare written military-credit evaluations and current costs, then confirm your exact program with VA and the school certifying official. This guide is not a ranking.
Can I use the GI Bill for a fully online degree?
You may use GI Bill benefits for an approved online degree if you meet the applicable eligibility requirements. Check the exact program and online division in VA's current records, then ask the school certifying official how your enrollment will be reported.
Does a Military Friendly designation mean VA approval?
No. Military Friendly is a third-party designation, not VA approval or a personal eligibility determination. Check WEAMS or VA's current approved-program search and confirm the program with the certifying official.
Will a college accept all my military training as degree credit?
Not necessarily. Schools evaluate military records against their own policies and degree requirements, and accepted credit may count only as electives. Request a written degree audit showing which required courses your training replaces.
How much housing allowance does fully online study pay?
For eligible Post-9/11 students who began using benefits on or after January 1, 2018, VA lists up to $1,261 a month for August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027. Your eligibility and rate of pursuit affect the actual payment. This amount is support while studying, not a promised personal award.
Does a hybrid program automatically qualify me for resident-rate housing?
No. A hybrid program may qualify you generally with more-than-half-time enrollment and at least one qualifying in-person class that counts toward your degree. The school certifying official and VA decide how the enrollment is certified and which rate may apply.
