VR&E subsistence allowance rates for veterans: 2026

VR&E subsistence allowance rates for 2026 depend on your training type, your rate of attendance and your number of dependents. VA publishes the dollar table on va.gov, and this guide explains what sets your rate and how it differs from the Post-9/11 GI Bill® housing allowance. If you are a veteran with a service-connected disability weighing a degree through Chapter 31, you will know what to ask your counselor by the end.

TL;DR

  • VR&E (Chapter 31) subsistence allowance is a monthly payment for living costs while you follow an approved plan.
  • Your 2026 rate depends on training type, rate of attendance and dependents, not on one flat number.
  • VA publishes the current rate table on va.gov; confirm the figure there before you plan a budget.
  • Eligible Chapter 31 participants may elect the Post-9/11 GI Bill subsistence rate while remaining in VR&E.

1. What the subsistence allowance is

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E, also called Chapter 31) helps veterans with a service-connected disability overcome an employment barrier. VA's VR&E eligibility guidance says you generally need a disability rating of at least 10% to be considered. Education is one path a VR&E plan can take.

While you follow an approved plan, VA may pay a monthly subsistence allowance toward living costs. It is support while you study, not a reason to pick a school.

Your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC), your VR&E counselor, approves your plan and your school. We are not VA and we do not file or review claims. This page is educational.

2. What sets your rate

There is no single 2026 number. Four things move the amount, and VA applies them to its published table.

Type of training

What it changes: Which column of VA's table applies

Who decides: Your plan and counselor

Rate of attendance

What it changes: Full-time, three-quarter-time or half-time training affects your Chapter 31 rate

Who decides: Your school's enrollment and VA

Dependents

What it changes: Monthly amount rises with dependents

Who decides: Your records with VA

Subsistence allowance election

What it changes: Standard Chapter 31 subsistence allowance or Post-9/11 GI Bill subsistence rate within VR&E

Who decides: You, if eligible, with your VRC's help

The table has no dollar column on purpose. Quoting a figure that is not checked against VA's current page would mislead you, and rates change on a schedule VA sets.

3. Chapter 31 allowance vs. the GI Bill housing allowance

While participating in VR&E, you may be eligible to elect the Post-9/11 GI Bill subsistence rate instead of the standard Chapter 31 subsistence allowance. This is a payment choice within VR&E, not a switch to using Chapter 33 education benefits. Your VRC can help you confirm eligibility and make the election.

The Chapter 33 figures below are comparison information, not a rate table for the Post-9/11 subsistence allowance paid under Chapter 31. These are the GI Bill figures for academic year 2026-27, from VA's published Post-9/11 GI Bill rates, effective August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027:

Online-only housing allowance

Up to $1,198 per month (50% of the national average) for 2026-27.

Tuition and fees cap at private or foreign schools

Up to $30,908.34 per academic year, August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027.

Books and supplies stipend

Up to $1,000 per academic year, not per month.

Resident housing allowance

Based on the DoD BAH for an E-5 with dependents at the ZIP code where classes take place. There is no single number.

The GI Bill housing allowance depends on your benefit tier and enrollment. Use VA's GI Bill Comparison Tool or our free MHA Calculator on the VeteranDegrees site for an estimate, never a promise. For the Chapter 31 side, once you are entitled VR&E may provide the benefits in your approved plan, and your counselor confirms what that includes.

4. How to find your exact rate

  1. Open VA's VR&E subsistence allowance page and check the effective date of the linked rate table before using it.
  2. Pick your training type from your approved plan.
  3. Match your rate of attendance (full-time, three-quarter-time or half-time) to your schedule.
  4. Match your number of dependents.
  5. Ask your VRC to confirm the amount before you enroll, and ask whether you can elect the Post-9/11 GI Bill subsistence rate within VR&E.

Write the date you checked next to the number. VA updates rates on set dates, and a screenshot from last year is not a budget.

5. When this does not fit

This page is not for you if you are looking for help with a disability rating, a claim or an appeal. VeteranDegrees does not do that, and VA's own resources are the place to start.

It is also not the full picture if you are not entitled to VR&E. In that case the GI Bill, Tuition Assistance or Chapter 35 may be your path.

If VR&E is your route, program format matters for your schedule. Read our guide to hybrid degree programs for veterans and the list of military-friendly online colleges to compare formats. Your counselor still has to approve the school you choose. For other ways to cover costs, see scholarships for veterans and military families.

6. FAQ

What are the VA VR&E subsistence allowance rates for 2026?

VA publishes them in a table on va.gov, and the amount depends on training type, rate of attendance and dependents. Check the current table and confirm the figure with your VR&E counselor.

Who decides how much I receive?

VA applies its published rates to your approved plan. Your VR&E counselor can confirm which category you fall under.

Can I use the GI Bill housing allowance instead?

Eligible VR&E participants may elect the Post-9/11 GI Bill subsistence rate instead of the standard Chapter 31 subsistence allowance. This election stays within VR&E; it is not a switch to Chapter 33 education benefits. Ask your VRC to confirm eligibility and the amount.

How much is the online-only GI Bill housing allowance in 2026-27?

Up to $1,198 per month for academic year 2026-27, per VA. Resident rates depend on the ZIP code where classes take place.

Does VeteranDegrees help with VR&E applications or claims?

No. VeteranDegrees offers free educational guidance only and does not file claims or applications. You apply to VA yourself.

Does a hybrid program change my allowance?

It may affect which housing rate applies under the GI Bill. Whether a program counts is decided by the school's certifying official and VA, so confirm before you enroll.
