Our VeteranDegrees team participated in three days of community resources in Compton to assist veterans and military families in understanding their education benefits.
The 23rd Annual Compton Veterans Stand Down
September 26–28 | Compton
Entering the 23rd Annual Compton Veterans Stand Down, it is evident much of the event takes place outdoors. Rows of canopies cover a parking area under a clear sky, each staffed by organizations offering various forms of support. Tables display team colors, banners rise above, and attendees move between tents to connect.
From September 26 to 28, veterans, military families, community groups, businesses, and volunteers gathered in Compton for three days of resources, support, and engagement.
Our VeteranDegrees team was honored to contribute. We hosted a booth focused on helping veterans and military-connected individuals better understand their education benefits, GI Bill® options, and available education pathways.
Our banner invited visitors to explore career-focused programs, and informational materials detailed how VA education benefits apply. A QR code was provided for those interested in continuing the conversation.
Listening to Veterans' Questions
What resonated most were the quieter moments—when veterans asked questions they had considered for months. Education benefits can seem complex, and many are unsure where to start or what benefits they may qualify for.
Being present in person, with time to listen, allowed us to answer questions clearly and guide individuals toward next steps aligned with their goals.
Why It Matters for Our Partner Institutions
For our partner institutions, this engagement is meaningful beyond a single weekend. Veterans and military-connected learners often weigh benefits rules, career objectives, and family needs in choosing schools.
Institutions that are accessible, understandable, and visible in these community settings are better positioned to support these students. Events like the Stand Down emphasize that building trust happens face to face, well before application processes begin.
Looking Ahead
We thank the Compton Chamber of Commerce and all individuals involved in organizing this annual event, including volunteers, organizations, and businesses that dedicated their time.
We were pleased to stand alongside them and look forward to continuing community engagement with our university partners in the coming months. Institutions interested in enhancing support for veteran and military-connected learners are welcome to reach out to our team.
